Bill G for P
I have probably lost my mind, but when I read Scott Adams post in which he suggests that Bill Gates might not make a bad President, I was intrigued. Excerpt:
I think that in an election cycle or two you will see an atheist business leader emerge as a legitimate candidate for president. And his name will be Bill Gates. … I doubt Bill Gates is considering a run for president right now, largely because it’s so hard to make a difference from that job. His charities will have more impact. But I think he’ll someday realize that the world needs a rational thinker in the top spot and no one else can win.
At least you’d know he wouldn’t be in it for the money or to speed up the Rapture. He has my vote.
Hmmmmm.
And again today:
For my president I want a mixture of Mother Teresa, Carl Sagan, Warren Buffet, and Darth Vader. Bill has all of their good stuff. His foundation will save more lives than Mother Teresa ever did. He’s got the Carl Sagan intelligence and rational mind. He’s a hugely successful businessman. And I have every reason to believe he can choke people just by concentrating in their general direction. You can’t tell me that wouldn’t be useful at a summit.
I’ve always felt that you should pick a president the same way you’d pick an attorney to help you out of a dangerous legal problem. Do you want the attorney who dresses nicely and belongs to your church? Or do you want the attorney who can rip out your opponent’s heart and put it on the hibachi before he dies? Maybe it’s just me, but I want an attorney who is part demon. And I want a president who isn’t afraid to make rational decisions.
Well, I can certainly get behind that! Some folks already have. I mean, having been a very happy Mac user for well over a year now, I naturally detest Windows, laugh my ass off when I read about Vista’s ridiculous versions and shutdown menu, and delight in reading negative things about the Zune, but Steve is not Presidential material. Besides, he’s busy inventing iPods and iPhones. You know, useful technology. Bill has time.
My one concern is the matter of leadership. For a few years now I’ve felt that what we need in a President is a great Leader. When did we actually have one of those last? Reagan, perhaps? Some might say Clinton. Others Kennedy. Regardless, I’m talking about somebody who’s exciting to hear talk. A great speaker. Somebody with vision in their voice. Bill has plenty of vision, I’m sure, but I have to agree with Adams: I almost can’t bear to watch or listen to him talk. Maybe if he took the Dale Carnegie course…
