The Sony Ad
This has been around a bit and then some, but I really have to recommend taking the time to let the new Sony BRAVIA commercial load and play. The low-res version is okay, but the high-res is spectacular.
I watched the “making of” featurette and have to agree with the fellow who says it puts him into a calm place when he watches it. I’ve watched it probably a dozen times and it just keeps delivering. It’s mesmerizing, the music helping to set the tone to watching a hundred thousand bouncy balls arcing down the street in slow motion. At full speed it must have been an exhilarating experience, but in slow motion with José González and his guitar, it’s alllllll right. Best of all, you don’t have to clean them up!
Thanks to Chap for sending this along, and to the Flickrblog entry of three months ago that hinted at what might be coming. Jess and I saw somebody having a BRAVIA television loaded into their car at BestBuy. The campaign must be working. (Is it even on TV here yet?)

I loved the frog getting attacked. Run, frog, RUN!
Curious, though — did you catch the previous commercials for the BRAVIA on television? “The television for men and women!” My only guess is that the set gets both Spike and Lifetime.

Looks like computer generated balls to me….. but I can’t see the balls too clearly on this POS monitor at work, no matter the “res”. Also, I think the experience would’ve been enhanced by a Buckethead and Bootsy Collins duet instead.

Please allow me to clarify, since my prior Bucket and Bootsy link blew up. Here she is in all her glory!!

I think what would have ultimately put this commercial in the stratosphere with the “Where’s the Beef?”, “Avoid the Noid”, and other all-time great ad campaigns would be if they replaced the super bouncy balls with super bouncy donkey magnets. My two cents.

Did you watch the “Making of” featureette? HORRIBLE combing/interlacing in QT7. Who let that go to the web!
The ad itself is undeniably fantastic though.

Mike: I have a VISA card that gives me points toward all Donkey purchases. I just can’t get enough of that store!
Ryan: I’d almost put it out of my mind. That was some terrible interlacing. But at least it’s got color.like.no.other…
