I Have Something In Common With An Eighth-Grader

One of Jessica’s students said something to another under his breath the other day.

“What was that?” Jessica asked.
“Uh? Oh… Death Cab for Cutie. It’s a band. They’re playing a concert this weekend.”
“Yeah, I know — I’m going to the show.”
“Wha…? You like Death Cab for Cutie?! You like Death Cab for Cutie?!

Jessica explained that I’m a fan and that I’m taking her. Her student thusly anointed her the title of “coolest teacher ever,” in the process declaring that I’m awesome, or whatever kids these days say.

So that’s good. It’s nice to be into the same band that a kid half your age is whispering in class about. I’m not sure whether that says more about my tastes or his. A year or two ago I determined that there must be some good, new rock music out there being done by young folks, and Death Cab for Cutie was what I found. I’m not sure I intended to go so far down in age group interest, though.

He’s going to the show, so if we see him I’ll have to quiz him about how he got into them. He’s also presumably organized enough to have bought a ticket ahead of time — the show is sold out. Unfortunately this also means that Jessica will have to be a little careful about what she wears… thanks, kid!

Furthermore, it seems I’ve been a bit preoccupied over the past two months: the band released a new album on August 30th, which I’m listening to now. I found out today. Chap said, “Uhh…. yeah, I figured you knew about that.” Oops. Preoccupied for the best of causes, at least.
