Farewell eHostDepot, Hello TextDrive!

As of this post 1128 is now hosted at TextDrive, perhaps best described as web hosting for and by nerds. So far I’m quite impressed. They have the full complement of secure connection services (SSH, SFTP, etc.), as well as very active support forums. The web admin interface is certainly no-frills, but so far I haven’t needed to mess with it. As a measure of performance, consider that the 1128 main page used to take about 0.7 seconds to generate. On TextDrive it takes under 0.2 seconds.

Lesson learned from my last web host: you get what you pay for.

Administrative note: the transition of the gallery isn’t quite done.

Hi, I was about to purchase a plan from eHostDepot. Can you please share what made you want to leave? I notice your comment on speed. Anything else? Thanks..

While some of my problems were technical, most of it was
    related to contacting them.

    • Web or MySQL services might go down and they’d deny there’d been any problem.
    • FTP login took a long time (more than a few seconds), which was
      rather annoying.
    • Calls to support or billing always, always, always rang through to
voicemail, and responses were rarely received.
    • E-mails to billing were never answered.
    • E-mails to support were sometimes answered, and sometimes lost.
This would be explained by, “We’re having trouble with our e-mail
      system.”
    • When I cancelled my account, they apparently ignored my e-mails and
phone calls, and charged me for a 1 year renewal anyway. I called my
credit card company’s fraud department and had them deny the charge,
      which they did.

I’ve had friends that have been very happy with LunarPages.com.
They’re a couple bucks a month more expensive, but it’s probably well
worth it. From what I’m told they’re quite competent.
