Houdini’s Trunk Escape

I’ve been wanting to post this image for about a month now. It’s a handy little plastic tag attached to the lock mechanism for the trunk of my 2005 Taurus rental (yes, the Jeep is still under construction. yes, I am thankful that I am not under construction (in that way), but… really. get with it, body shop. jackasses.).

Yes, it seems that persons being trapped in the trunk of this sedan was a consideration of the designers. They are right to be concerned; the trunk is quite roomy. Almost roomy enough to not mind being trapped in the trunk. Still, it is comforting to know that, should I become trapped, a glow-in-the-dark tag with a charming flee the trunk icon will be there to help me free myself. I hope the icon designers took at least ten times the joy I do in seeing it when they were sketching it out.

Changing the subject… I’m trying to go to bed earlier these days, but you may have noticed that it’s 2am at the time of this post. I got industrious today and decided to fix my toilet. It no longer spontaneously flushes; instead a small leak has sprung in the water supply valve that feeds the tank. I’m planning on getting up at 5am to empty the massive drip pan I’ve put under it, so I figured that going to bed at 1am or 2am wouldn’t make much of a difference. Not how I was hoping to end an otherwise lovely weekend. So it goes, though.

I see they’re punching out the logo now. Older Taurii (Including, say, my brothers 2001) had the icon printed on in black. Perhaps that didn’t provide enough contrast in the dark or, more likely, it was cheaper to just mold them with the icon already on there — 1 less manufacturing step.

Ah, the marvels of auto engineering.
