Get Your Caps Off (Reprise)
This is a follow-up to the previous entry, which contained a link to Circuits Discovering… Each Other, a collection of photographs of electrical components emulating hard core. It now occurs to me that what we’re seeing here is folk art.
Wikipedia calls folk art “the art of the ignorant.” Perhaps that’s a bit judgemental. A more apt description might be “art composed of materials commonly available to the artist.” A lot of auto shops build muffler men (Egg, the arts show, did a piece on this phenomenon), and I think it’s right to call this folk art. My friend Bob Bosma builds model structures (and wind chimes) out of auto parts (photo by Vince). Again: art using commonly available materials.
Yeah, “Circuits Discovering… Each Other” is a bit lewd, as circuits go, but I’d argue that it’s the folk art of the electrical engineer nerd. That said, the worth of folk art is a whole other matter…
