Peter Falk in The AV Club
Columbo was one of my favorite series growing up, particularly the ones done in the late 80’s/early 90’s. The Onion A.V. Club has an excellent interview with Peter Falk, who has a book on the way. Some interesting anecdotes about John Cassavetes (someone I need to learn more about) and the usual unusually thoughtful questions from the A.V. Club interviewer, along with Falk’s charming, casual style (which really comes through in the text) make this one worth reading before the link goes bad.

Columbo was all well and good — but lets not forget Mr. Falk’s stellar performance in Rob Reiner’s The Princess Bride. His grandfather character was the proverbial icing in that flick…

Maybe this is another one of those “if I’d seen this movie earlier in life” bits, but I never thought that much of Falk in The Princess Bride. Those scenes with Falk and Savage always felt a little unnecessary for me. Like a Wonder Years episode without Winnie - what’s the point?! ;)

No way — the back/forth from the story to the “reality” of the kid and the grandpa reading the story made for some great little cuts and cutesy devices. It wasn’t so much that Falk was great for the movie, but given that there was a cheek-pinching, idiosyncratic grandfather character required, Falk was great. Gruff but endearing. (”See? I knew she wouldn’t marry that rotten Prince Humperdink!” “Yes, you’re very smart. Shut up.”)
